Civil society to protest on 5 January

Saturday, 28 December 2019, 08:40 Last update: about 6 years ago

Civil society groups will once again organise a protest on 5 January, with details to be announced later.

Protests in Valletta have been organised on a regular basis in the past weeks, particularly when Parliament was still convening.

The House’s recess as well as Christmas activities led to a suspension of these events, but they will resume once the New Year starts.

In a statement, civil society groups Repubblika and Occupy Justice expressed anger and concern at what is happening in the country. The pretension of normality is covering the institutional collapse of our democracy, they said.

The NGOs are calling for a society free of corruption and organised crime.

A protest will be held on 5 January and, on 11 January, Repubblika will be holding its general meeting. It will be the same day that a new leader for the Labour Party will be elected.
