Updated: 24 migrants arrested after Safi centre protest

24 migrants were arrested late on Monday after a protest by at the Safi Detention Centre.

The protest started at about 7.30pm, with several migrants banging on fences and trying to rush the gate. No one was injured. 

The reason for the disturbance was not immediately clear.

Migrants held several violent protests last year, demanding their freedom.

The police said a number of migrants, with faces covered, were causing damage and refusing to obey orders by detention service staff. The migrants dislodged stones from the building and launched them at the officials. Damage was also caused to the dormitories and the DS officers’ room.

Police officers entered the compound and brought the situation under control. A medical team was in place.

The police identified 24 persons who took part in the protest and arrested them. They were taken to the police headquarters in Floriana. It is not excluded that these individuals will be charged in court in the coming hours.
