PM to contest on second district in next election, effectively ‘kicking out’ Muscat

Saturday, 18 January 2020, 10:13 Last update: about 6 years ago

Prime Minister Robert Abela said he will be contesting on the second district in the next election.

Abela will also be contesting on the sixth district, which incorporates his hometown Qormi, from where he was elected last time round.

Speaking on TVM's Xarabank, Abela was responding to criticism that none of the ministers he appointed in the Cabinet comes from the second district, traditionally a Labour Party stronghold.

There is only one parliamentary secretary from the second district in Abela’s Cabinet, Chris Agius.

Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat also contested on the second district in the 2013 and 2017 election.

It is not known if Muscat will be contesting the next election. But it is highly unlikely now that, if he does, he will be contesting on the second district.

Having both current and former PMs contesting the same district would create unnecessary competition.
