Police chief: Our proposal ‘superior’ to that of the Opposition – PM

Prime Minister Robert Abela said this morning that the proposal to be discussed by Cabinet with regard to the appointment of the police commissioner is “superior” to that of the Opposition.

On Monday, the Nationalist Party presented a draft Bill which would see police commissioners appointed and removed by a two-thirds Parliamentary majority. The motion seeks to make amendments in the Constitution.

But, in comments given to the media ahead of the Cabinet meeting being held this morning, Abela said that he did not agree with the proposal.

“We will be discussing the proposal during the Cabinet meeting and will be announcing it in due time,” he said.

We will be having a more transparent system, he said without elaborating further.
