Updated: Jesuit psychologist Fr Alfred Darmanin passes away

Jesuit psychologist Fr Alfred Darmanin passed away on Monday evening. He was 79 years old.

 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday 13 February at 3.30pm at the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy, Naxxar.

Born in Santa Venera, Darmanin studied at the Lyceum before joining the dockyard as shipwright apprentice. In 1958 he joined the Society of Jesus, and graduated BA in Washington, philosophy in Rome, Master of Science in Washington and theology in Brussels. He furthered his studies in Belgium and California.

Darmanin was a member of the International Association of Applied Psychology of the Association Internationale D’Etudes Medico-Psycho-Religieuses. He was head of the psychology department at the University of Malta between 1988 and 1994 and founder and director of counselling services.

Darmanin was the archbishop’s delegate for the diocesan pastoral reform between 1986 and 1989 and founder member and first president of the Maltese Psychology Association.
