This year’s Carnival celebrations attracted over 60,000 people to Valletta, the Culture Ministry said in a statement.

Carnival 2020 proved to be a resounding success, it said, managing to combine traditional elements of ‘il-Karnival ta’ Malta’, with new and exciting initiatives.

From the 21st till the 25th of February, Malta’s capital, its neighbouring city Floriana, as well as Ħamrun were embellished with spectacular carnival floats, unique dance choreography and colourful elaborate costumes.

Minister José Herrera commented that this year’s edition of Carnival 2020 reached new heights, both in terms of quality presented by the participating artists through the floats, the dance choreography and costumes, and also through the vibrant atmosphere created by the thousands who visited Valletta and the neighbouring localities during the Carnival period.

Herrera thanked all the participants and organisers for their dedication and for making Carnival 2020 an impressive experience for all participants and enthusiasts alike.

Festivals Malta Director Annabelle Stivala said that, “through careful planning and a great deal of preliminary work throughout the year, we can proudly say that this year’s initiatives were all positively received by the public.” For this year’s edition, Festivals Malta introduced a number of new initiatives, in particular; the poster design by Digital Arts students from the University of Malta, the complete redesign of St George’s Square, and the Carnival Party by DJ Tenishia at Triton Square.

Jason Busuttil, Artistic Director of Carnival, also commented about the overall success and the positive feedback, remarking on the crowds of people that flocked the streets of Valletta to celebrate Carnival 2020. “Valletta came to life for the whole five days. Republic Street saw thousands of locals and tourists, and the enclosure at St George’s Square was sold out every day.”

The Artistic Director commented that the Tritoni Carnival Celebration, which was organised in collaboration with VCA and with the involvement of DJ Tenishia, not only increased viewership, but also created a newfound enthusiasm and interest in those who do not normally attend Carnival festivities, with the broadcast reaching over 900,000 viewers worldwide.
