Updated: Another 10 NGOs support call on government not to open spring hunting season this year

Thursday, 2 April 2020, 10:43 Last update: about 5 years ago

A total of 10 NGOs working in the environmental and cultural field are supporting the call made in the past days by BirdLife Malta on Prime Minister Robert Abela not to open a spring hunting season this year.

On Wednesday, BirdLife Malta slammed the ORNIS Committee for 'rubber stamping Cabinet's decision to open a spring hunting season.' A decision is still to be officially announced.

Amidst the COVID-19 crisis where all of society is asked to stay indoors unless exceptionally necessary, it is outrageous that the government will be allowing thousands of hunters to go out to hunt in spring, BirdLife said in a statement.

Apart from the fact that spring hunting is unsustainable, the lack of the necessary resources to enforce such a derogation would only mean a massacre of protected birds.

The eNGOs have urged the Government to recognise that the country is for everyone to enjoy and not just a group with narrow interests which is being constantly privileged.

The eNGOs endorsing this statement and supporting our call are:

·        Nature Trust-FEE Malta

·        Friends of the Earth Malta

·        Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA)

·        Greenhouse Malta

·        Moviment Graffitti

·        Bicycle Advocacy Group

·        Din l-Art Ħelwa
