The Archbishop of Malta Charles Scicluna sent a message of hope and solidarity to all children for Holy Week in a video posted on the Archdiocese of Malta social media.
He started his message explaining three items he had before him on a desk, starting with a candle holder which he had constructed during a pottery class which he was still in Form 1. Considering it’s been 50 years since that time it still looks in optimal condition!
The second item he brought was a harmonica which he skilfully played as a testament of all the hours he spent practising as a child, which he said almost drove his mother crazy.
Finally, he held a string of rosary beads saying that since his first holy communion he has always had one with him wherever he goes as it reminds him of the prayers to the Holy Mother and also the protection of the Lord.
For him, all these items together exemplify what Holy Week is: a celebration of Jesus’ death but also of his resurrection.
He explained that on Easter Saturday, the church lights a candle, much like the one his candle holder is showcasing in the video, accompanied with the phrase “the light of Christ”.
He reminded everyone that, like Christ, Christians need to be the light for all those who are vulnerable during these challenging times. He encouraged all the young viewers to call their elderly, even for a simple hello, as it will definitely brighten up their day.
He appealed for everyone to remember to rejoice during this important event and make use of social media to follow the number of celebrations the Archdiocese has in store for the coming weeks.
“We will follow Jesus step by step on Good Friday during his last few moments on earth but then we will celebrate his resurrection which calls for song and joyfulness. Let us remember to celebrate with each other among family and gather to pray; remind your Mother and Father.”
The Archbishop ended on an encouraging note by calling for all children to keep working on their school work at home – “it is really homework now, there is not school work for now!” Additionally, one should also try to keep the peace at home and remember to help out their parents at home; as long as they do not break anything that is!
“God bless you, children,” he said after a masterful harmonic solo.
