The Maltese community in Russia came together to recite the Maltese national anthem as a symbol of solidarity with everyone in Malta, especially those who are working at the frontlines of this battle against Covid-19.
The Embassy of Malta in Russia explained that, like the rest of the world, the Covid-19 pandamic has confined life practically completely indoors in Russia. However, as unfortunate as this situation may seem, the embassy believes that moments like these can bring out the best of humanity.
“During this Covid-19 crisis, all of us at the Embassy of Malta in Moscow became very close to the Maltese community in the Russian Federation,” the embassy said. “The Maltese who did not repatriate did so because they have their family in Russia. They still are, however, very closely linked with their relatives and with Malta.”
It explained that when Malta and Russia stopped flights, Maltese living in Russia became very homesick and the embassy spent a lot of time calling them and reassure them.
“We felt, however, that they wanted to do something for Malta. Locked and confined to our homes, we came out with this idea of a chain of Maltese all over Russia reciting the Maltese national anthem which, after all, is a prayer for protection,” the embassy said.
The result was a video which they posted on Youtube entitled ‘Malta on our Mind’ which is dedicated with admiration to the Maltese Health Care workers.
