Firefighters were called into action on Wednesday morning to respond to a fire in a sixth-floor apartment in Xemxija.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which was controlled after a short time, but a cat succumbed to injuries it sustained in the fire.

The Department for Civil Protection said that it had deployed three fire-engines, including one with a turn-table ladder, with three officers and 10 firefighters from the Xemxija Fire Station and Kordin Fire Station.

The cat was found and rescued in the search after the fire was controlled, but succumbed to its injuries inspite of urgent medical care administered by firefighters and the Accident and Emergency Medical team.
