Fewer cars on the road lead to 8% drop in accidents, 15% fall in injuries - NSO

Fewer cars on the road as the country battles the spread of Coronavirus also meant a reduction of traffic accidents and injured people on the road, the NSO said today.

During the first quarter of 2020, there were however two road traffic fatalities, a driver and a pedestrian. During this quarter, one more fatality occurred when compared to the same period in 2019.

The number of reported traffic accidents in the first quarter this year reached 3,357, down by 8.2 per cent over the same period in 2019. The Northern Harbour district registered the most accidents with 1,170 cases or 34.9 per cent of all accidents.

Road traffic casualties decreased by 15.0 per cent to 306 over the same period in 2019. Grievously injured persons amounted to 59, and consisted of 36 drivers, 9 passengers and 14 pedestrians/cyclists.

The majority of those grievously injured were males (66.1 per cent), accompanied with two male fatalities. The majority of casualties involved persons in the 41 to 59 age-bracket.
