A number of lecture halls located at the Univeristy's Gateway building are being turned into wards to serve as an extension of Mater Dei Hospital.
The works are being carried out by the Foudnation for Medical Services.
The temporary wards will have a ccapacity of 42 beds and will be used in case the country needs more beds than are available at Mater Dei, the Health Ministry said.
Speaking during a visit, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne said the authorities are preparing for any Covid-19 eventuality, incluing a scenario where the country experiences a second wave of infections.
The authorities have been proactive, he said, and Malta will be prepared for any situation, including the seasonal influenza which usually hits around November.
FMS CEO Carmen Ciantar said the works were carried out within less than two weeks.
