A large grass fire in the area of l-Ahrax in Mellieha was reported at around 4am and was fully extinguished by around 9am on Sunday, the police said.
Energy Minister Michael Farrugia said on Facebook that the fire was started by irresponsible people.
Initially, the fire was thought to have been put out, however the fire started again as the sun rose. Thus, the police had to divert the traffic from the area.
Once the fire was extinguished the police reported that the area has been re-opened for use. However, the public is advised to avoid the areas of l-Ahrax tal-Mellieha since it is closed due to the fire.
In a Facebook post, Minority Leader of the Local Council of Mellieha, Ivan Castillo said that he "woke up this morning to a tragedy."

He thanked the Civil Protection Department (CPD) and the Malta Police Force for their help, "as well as all those people who went to give a helping hand."
Castillo said that "he has been pushing for dedicated enforcement in this area and Mizieb, and now Mgiebah and Cirkewwa." He stated that it is "time to wake up and time to take serious action."
