Tarxien R. to remain in Premier League, leaders in respective divisions also declared champions

Floriana FC were yesterday declared Malta champions for season 2019-2020 after a vote by the MFA Council.

The Council voted in favour of a proposal that all the leaders in the four divisions - Premier, First, Second and Third divisions - were to be awarded the title of champions.

The vote - 47 voted in favour from 75 members - sees the Greens winning their 26rth title in their illustrious history.

Tarxien Rainbows, who were already mathematically relegated with six matches still to be played were reinstated in the Premier League for next season.

The MFA Council voted in favour of a proposal which stated that for this season, there will be no relegations in the various leagues organised by the association.

Forty five members voted in favour of the proposal which will also see no other teams being relegated in the other divisions.

Historic Zejtun C promotion

Zejtun Corinthians made history yesterday as a vote was taken on a proposal that teams which stood in promotion spots would be promoted. Zejtun were leaders of the First Division when the season was cancelled.

Second-placed Lija Athletic will also join the 14 clubs in the Premier League which will therefore feature 16 teams for season 2020/21.

Marsa, Marsaxlokk and San Gwann were promoted from the BOV Second Division to the First Division which will, next season, be known as the Challenge League.

Although usually two teams are promoted from Division 2 and Marsaxlokk and San Gwann shared second place, following a proposal of the Executive Committee, based on Article 49 (xv) and 161 of the Rules Governing Competitions, the proposal said that in this case, three teams would be promoted rather than two.

For next year, the Challenge League would have fifteen teams.

On the other hand, Second and Third Division teams will be playing in the newly-proposed National Amateur League. This league will feature twenty two teams next season divided into three sections - one group of eight teams and two groups of seven.
