Minister for Education Owen Bonnici said parents should not be too concerned with sending their children to schools such as Skola Sajf. He expressed his optimism to move forward and return to the state of normality everyone so longs for.

Following the closure of schools on 13 March for the rest of the academic year because of the Coronavirus, the government announced that Skolasajf is to open its doors and will start on Wednesday 1 July.

On Wednesday, this newsroom asked Minister Bonnici about how the government will ensure that children will abide by the measures of social distancing, as it is rather difficult to control young children, as well as how are parents going to be reassured that it is safe to send their children to school.

Bonnici said that “as far as protocols are concerned, numerous discussions are being held with various stakeholders together with the health authorities in order to establish all the safety measures that are necessary to keep everyone as safe as possible.”

Minister Bonnici said that during the COVID-19 pandemic in Malta, “we have already had this experience with a childcare centre in San Gwann which remained open throughout the pandemic.”

This particular childcare centre cared for “children of doctors, nurses, other medical professions aswell as other workers, and most importantly it operated successfully and without difficulty during times in which people were more worried about COVID-19 than now.”
