The Archdiocese of Malta has published a list of guidelines for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. From Saturday 27 June, measures prepared by the Church Authorities in this regard will enter into force and remain as so until specified otherwise.

Prior to the publication of the guidelines, there was uncertainty, and for a time people thought that such events will be postponed to 2021.

The Archdiocese calls on parishes to be creative in ways to follow up on the last few sessions of catechesis for the sacrament. It is noted that parents who feel that their children are not prepared to receive the sacrament this year, that their children may receive it the following year, 2021.

Social distancing is a must

The regulations emphasize that all individuals must maintain a safe distance of two meters from one another, unless they are people living in the same household. Candidates, their parents, siblings and godparents sitting in the cluster seats do not have to wear a mask or visor. Therefore it is advisable that due to the absence of masks, the distance between one cluster and another is increased.

Candidates for the First Holy Communion must sit in their reserved cluster seats along with their parents and siblings. When particular circumstances do not permit this, then such cases can be discussed individually. In the case of Confirmation, the candidate shall sit in the cluster seat together with their godparent. Parents will have different arrangements in terms of seating according to the location.

Whilst it is not permitted for family members to leave their place to take photos or videos, members of the congregation may take off their masks or visors to take photos with the candidate after the celebration. Once the photo is taken, the mask/visor must be worn again.

Holy Communion be given to individuals in their seats

Similar to the current Church regulations, those taking Holy Communion for the first time should stay in their seat, to prevent more movement in the Church. The priest is to approach the candidates only and he does not have to wear a visor or mask.

Holy Confirmation

With regard to Holy Confirmation, the priest will prepare a number of cotton wools with anointed oil, so that the priest does not have to touch the candidate on the forehead, but they will use to the cotton wool to make the sign of the cross instead. A cotton wool should be used for each person and after Mass the cotton wool should be burned and no candidates or other members of the congregation should take the cotton wool.

The granting of peace of Confirmation shall be through dialogue, and without taking each other by the hand. It is highlighted that before the anointing of oil begins and as soon as it ends, the priest shall wash his hands with sanitizer. It is advised that he does so throughout the ritual too. The priest shall not have any physical contact with candidates or mentors during the moment of celebration.

Photographers are permitted, but as much as possible avoid big groups

Professional photographers and videographers are permitted to provide their services during the ceremonies. If possible, photographers should avoid photographs of children in groups, so as to maintain social distancing amongst one another. At no time in the celebration should the priest or other individuals touch hands.
