After months of silence, protests resume seeking ‘truth and justice’

Civil Society NGOs have come together once more to protest outside parliament, seeking truth and justice on Monday evening.

The protest, held by Repubblika, Occupy Justice and Manuel Delia, was organised after more revelations in court and after the Times of Malta revealed how 17 Black, owned by suspected mastermind of Caruana Galizia's murder Yorgen Fenech, made millions off Enemalta's purchase of a wind farm in Montenegro.

"We do not want Malta to continue to sink into the filth of the corrupt. Our cries and prayers are simple: We want the truth. We want justice."

The NGOs are calling for a joint investigation between Europol and the Malta Police Force into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia and the corruption associated with this murder.

They highlight that any politician involved should resign or be dismissed. They are also calling that the directors of Enemalta plc to uphold responsibility and give a full account of the Montenegro deal, and "bring back the millions stolen."

After a number of revelations related to the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia were revealed and the arrest of 17 Black owner Yorgen Fenech, protestors gathered the streets of Valletta last year, calling for justice and the end of corruption. The revelations eventually led to a huge government crisis, seeing a minister, Chief of Staff and also the Prime Minister resign.

Some protestors on Monday waved Maltese flags, whilst others held banners with "mafia", "Onorevoli bla sinsla" and "Abela pupazz ta Muscat". As the crowd grew bigger, people began chanting "mafia" and "Kastilja ghal Kordin".

Many were seen wearing visors or masks and amongst the crowd were PN MPs David Thake, Claudette Buttigieg, and Jason Azzopardi. When Azzopardi joined the crowd, many cheered thanks and applauded him for his work on the Daphne Caruana Galizia case.

Addressing the protest, Marion Pace Axiaq called for the letters of resignations of former police chief Lawerene Cutajar, Konrad Mizzi, Chris Cardona, Kieth Schembri and former prime minister Joseph Muscat to be made public.

"We expected a change from this new government. Previously Joseph Muscat was Prime Minister and Robert Abela was his consultant. Now, Robert Abela is Prime Minister and Joseph Muscat is his consultant. What is the difference?"

PN executive councillor Mark Sammut addressed the crowd, and said how Robert Abela's government has constantly told people to let the institutions do their work, whilst he explained the administration took people for a ride.

"They did not work to uncover the truth, but really they were trying to bury the truth once and for all."

He said that based on Schembri's testimony today, after constantly denying knowledge of the ownership of 17 Black, he should have been arrested. "He constantly lied, lied to us for seven years."

He stressed that the public must continue pushing pressure against the corrupt. "They are scared of us when we come out here and call for justice, so we will continue fighting so that justice is done."
