PN call for Byron Camilleri’s resignation ‘for not protecting key state witness’; PL reacts

Wednesday, 22 July 2020, 12:07 Last update: about 6 years ago

The PN have called for the resignation of Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri for the state’s failure to protect the state’s key witness in the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

“The news that Melvin Theuma is in danger of dying shows how the state has failed to protect the life of the most important witness in the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia”, the statement read.

In the statement, the PN made no reference to the fact that the police have said that the indications are the Theuma inflicted his wounds onto himself.

On the contrary, the PN said that the developments “once again confirm how criminality has taken over our country’s institutions and is doing what it wants”.

“Our country’s government does not have the willingness and moral authority to fight criminality. Instead, the government is allowing criminality to rear its head more”, the PN said.

In front of all this, the PN said, Camilleri should shoulder political responsibility and resign.

The statement was signed by Beppe Fenech Adami, Karol Aquilina, and Jason Azzopardi – who is also one of the lawyers for the Caruana Galizia family.

The statement itself was published less than 12 hours after PN leader Adrian Delia posted a late night video appealing for caution and prudence, and for nobody to draw conclusions before formal medical reports were released.

Describing the events as “dramatic and tragic”, Delia insisted this was no time for partisan politics.

“This is not a normal country and in moments like this we must come together more than other times to ascertain that criminality does not continue ruling this country… normal people do not deserve to pass through these traumas… let us not hurry and speculate, let us wait for formal medical reports and then give our political reaction later,” Delia said.

Opposition puts partisan interests before the search for the truth - PL

Reacting, the Labour Party said it is clear that the Opposition is choosing to ignore the facts of the case.

Instead, the PN is making allegations without substantiating them, it said.

The PL said the PN's call for Camilleri's resignation is nothing but "a typical statement with the intention being not to seek the truth or justice, but political opportunism."

It noted that the statement was signed by MPs who had retracted statements made a few hours earlier.

"At the same time, the government continues to work to bring about positive reforms that will build trust in our country's institutions. This is something that does not go down well with the same Opposition speakers."
