The government’s inaction on construction reform is destroying lives, Alternattiva Demokratika and the Partit Demokratiku said in a joint statement. 

The statement was published after yet another construction related fatality, when a Gambian worker was killed in a construction site accident on Thursday morning in Cospicua. 

“In the unabating and uncontrolled frenzy to demolish and re-build every possible square inch, yet another person’s life has ended in tragedy in Cospicua yesterday”, the statement read. 

“It is evident that the new legislation enacted last year with all stakeholders of the construction industry is not worth the paper it was printed on. The system is still broken”, the two parties said.

“The Kamra tal-Periti was quick to release a damning statement lamenting that no or little progress has been achieved, singling out the government in particular for not honouring its written commitment to the much needed and urgent reform”, they said. 

“This continued failure by government will inevitably see more lives lost and families destroyed”, they added. 

The two parties urged the government to live up to its commitment without delay and lead the reform as formally committed to in its letter of commitment of last August. 

“In the absence of immediate and visible progress on this front, the position of the minister in charge will no longer be tenable.”
