Steve Borg wins MFA Footballer of the Year award

Long-time Valletta stalwart Steve Borg was named as the 2019-20 MFA Footballer of the Year on Monday.

Borg claimed what is the most prestigious individual honour in Maltese football after collecting the highest number of votes.

Coaches, captains and officials of all the clubs in the respective divisions together with a panel of journalists who follow the various leagues take part in the voting process for the individual awards.

Valletta goalkeeper Henry Bonello and Floriana captain Jurgen Pisani were the two other finalists.

It is the first time that Borg, who has joined Gzira United for the upcoming season after a five-year spell with Valletta which was punctuated by a year with Aris Limassol in Cyprus, won the prestigious award.

Floriana coach Enzo Potenza, who led the club to Premier League glory for the first time in 26-years, won the Best Coach award, while the Best Young Player and Best Foreign Player awards both went to Floriana players as well – Jan Busuttil and Kristian Keqi respectively took home those honours.

Mgarr United’s 16-year-old starlet Haley Bugeja, who is on the verge of a high-profile move with Serie A side Sassuolo, meanwhile won the BOV Women’s League Best Player award and the Women’s U-19 Best Player award.

Bugeja has scored an astonishing 140 goals in 63 official games with Mgarr’s senior and youth squads – 73 of which came in 21 games last season.

Lija Athletic’s Albanian talisman Erjon Beu meanwhile took home BOV First Division Best Player award after scoring 25 goals throughout last season – the equivalent of a goal every 60 minutes.

Marsaxlokk’s Ryan Micallef won the BOV Second Division Best Player award, while Attard’s Nicholas Schembri won the BOV Third Division Best Player award.

Balzan Youths’ Zak Grech was voted as the Best Youth League Player, while Luxol St Andrews’ Celino Alves De Freitas was voted the Futsal Player of the Year.
