Two Sudanese men were arrested by police in the early hours of Thursday morning in connection with two separate thefts, one of which left a man with grievous injuries.
Police said that while police stationed at the Marsa police station were carrying out a patrol in the locality at around 1am, shouting was heard in Triq Derby.
There, police were approached by a 28-year-old from Mali who told them that he had been robbed by two people.
While on site, the police were approached by another man – a 23-year-old from Eritrea – who said that he had been assaulted and robbed by two people, one of which with a pointed weapon.
An ambulance was called and the man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital where he was certified as suffering from grievous injuries.
District police began searching for the two people as described by the victims, and soon saw two people matching their descriptions near the Marsa police station.
They were stopped and at that point one of them threw a pointed weapon to the floor. Keys, lighters, two mobile phones, and an amount of money were found when they were searched.
The two men – a 20-year-old and an 18-year-old, both from Sudan, were arrested and taken to the Police’s headquarters while further investigations took place.
Duty Magistrate Doreen Clarke appointed a number of experts in a magisterial inquiry, while police investigations are on-going.
