Former Judges Michael Mallia, Lawrence Quintano, Antonio Mizzi on appointments board for AG post

Monday, 17 August 2020, 15:59 Last update: about 5 years ago

Judge Emeritus Michael Mallia will lead the Commissioner for the Appointment of the Attorney General, with Judge Emeritus Lawrence Quintano and Judge Emeritus Antonio Mizzi making up the rest of the commission.

This was announced by the Ministry for Justice on Monday, two days after Peter Grech tendered his resignation from the post of Attorney General.

In his resignation letter, published on Monday, Grech said that he was often unjustly attacked and that his reluctance to react to criticism was often mistaken as an acceptance of claims levelled against him.

The Ministry said that the Commission is being appointed after an important reform was implemented in 2019 which saw the separation of powers within the office, creating the role of State Advocate along with that of Attorney General.

The statement read that a call to fill the vacancy of the Attorney General will be published in the Government Gazette in a short period of time.

Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis thanked the outgoing Grech for his service to the Maltese state over the last ten years.
