Attorney General Peter Grech has handed in his resignation, which has been accepted by the President of Malta.

Peter Grech has been one of the most criticized figures in recent years over his failure to prosecute alleged high-level and political corruption, with many people across the board calling for his resignation.

He was appointed to the post in 2010 by the then Nationalist administration.

His resignation will come into effect on 9 September.

In a statement following the news, Prime Minister Robert Abela thanked Grech for his service to the state in his 10-year term in office.

"Following unprecedented amendments implemented by this administration, Minister for Justice, Equality and Governance Edward Zammit Lewis will now be establishing an Appointment Commission which will issue a public call for applications in accordance with Chapter 90 of the Laws of Malta", the short statement read.
