Having lost in their last outing against Hibernians, Floriana wanted to bounce back with a win against Sirens. And so they did as they defeated their opponents by a 3-2 scoreline. The first half was a rather balanced affair but the Greens upped their tempo in the second forty five minutes and ran out worthy winners.
This was the second defeat for Sirens and after three matches they can only count on a point from their outing against Sliema Wanderers. Thiago Espindola was missing through suspension with Manuel Bustos filling in.
Floriana started with a bang when after just four minutes they forged ahead. Off a Camenzuli cross from the left flank in came Jan Busuttil who rifled the ball him.
Sirens responded with a well taken free kick by Bustos which was cleared into a corner by Venancio. But the St. Paul’s Bay outfit drew level on 18 minutes. A solo run by Samba Tounkara ended with the Mali player finding the corner of the net with a shot from the edge of the area.
In the last part of the first half it was all Floriana though they never set any bushes on fire. On 29 minutes Fonseca saw his shot saved by an alert Cassar. And on the stroke of half time a Venancio free kick was blocked with some difficulty by the Sirens goalkeeper..
Four minutes into the second half and Floriana were once again in the lead. A Leone cross from the left flank was perfectly met by Pisani whose header was partially saved by Cassar and in came Kristian Keqi who blasted the ball into the roof of the net.
Floriana were now in control and kept piling on the pressure. In fact they increased their lead on 64 minutes. Jan Busuttil played a one two on the edge of the area with Brandon Paiber with his deflected shot finding the corner of the net.
Sirens tried to come back into the frame and in the 67th minute a Maxwell shot from just inside the area ended inches wide. Twenty minutes from the end Floriana missed a good chance when Fonseca set Venancio in the area but the latters diagonal shot ended over the bar.
Thirteen minutes from the end Sirens reduced the deficit. A Ryan Grech free kick was headed goalwards by Domoraud with the ball hitting the upright but there was Manuel Bustos who headed into the net from close range.
Sirens tried to save the game in the closing stages but Floriana controlled well to take home the points at stake. The only negative point for the Greens was when Leone was sent off deep into stoppage time for a second bookable offence.
