Prime Minister Robert Abela said the European Union should look at the Mediterranean as one whole region, and divide it into sectors.

Speaking in Brussels, where he is attending a leaders’ summit treating the EU’s relations with Turkey, Abela said Malta’s position is that the EU should consider the Med as one region that also includes issues related to migration.

More than sanctions, Malta believes in peace and dialogue and it appears that the decision taken by the European Council will be to calm the waters. Tensions with Turkey should not be allowed to escalate.

The European Commission’s proposals on a migration pact offer a good base, Abela said, although he insisted that Malta is not being offered the solidarity that it expects.
