Former MEP Miriam Dalli and OPM Chief of Staff Clyde Caruana were co-opted to Parliament on Monday evening.
The co-option took place during question time, before the announcement of the Budget for 2021.
They replaced former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who resigned earlier this month, and Labour MP Etienne Grech, who resigned last week.
The Electoral Commission had started the process for a casual election after Muscat’s resignation but neither of the eligible candidates – Stefan Buontempo and Mark Causon – submitted their nomination.
Etienne Grech had become an MP as a result of a casual election, so a co-option had to take place to fill his seat.
Miriam Dalli was being mentioned as a replacement for Muscat but had declined comment before her co-option to Parliament was announced by the Labour Party on Saturday. Clyde Caruana is now expected to step down from his role as OPM Chief of Staff. Ian Borg (not the minister) is being touted as his possible replacement.
Shortly after the co-option procedure, Parliament also commemorated the memory of the late PN MP Frederick Azzopardi, who passed away on Saturday aged 71.
PN Deputy Leader David Agius described Azzopardi as a 'gentleman' to loud table-banging from across the room.
Prime Minister Robert Abela also paid tribute to Azzopardi, saying that his loss is a big one, and passed his sincerest condolences to Azzopardi's family.
Speaker Anglu Farrugia said Azzopardi was an example of how one can debate a matter but remain civil and respectable. He said that a proper occasion for tribute to Azzopardi will no doubt be found in the future.
