Over 250 people fined for not wearing masks

Tuesday, 20 October 2020, 16:18 Last update: about 5 years ago

Over 250 people were fined over the course of last week for not wearing face-masks as outlined in already existing legislation.

People must wear masks in all public places, including public transport, and will face a 50 fine if they are caught not adhering to these measures.  In line with a press conference last Friday, the wearing of masks outside will become obligatory as well, with fines increased to 100.

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri wrote on Facebook that over 250 fines were handed out by police and community officials in the past week to people who were caught without a mask.

He said that in the coming days, these fines will be extended to those who do not wear a mask outside.

Camilleri said that hundreds of inspections were carried out and that the majority of people are being disciplined in this regard.  In many cases, he said, the authorities draw the attention of people and educate them.

He said that law enforcement entities are working hand-in-hand with health inspectors and tourism authority enforcement teams in order to enforce the rules in entertainment establishments, bars and restaurants.
