Two Labour Party candidates for the MEP elections have claimed that there is a clear difference between those who want the Maltese to benefit in the European institutions, and their opposition, the Nationalist Party, who continually works against Malta.

In a press conference on Monday, Alex Agius Saliba and Claudette Abela Baldacchino said that the Opposition in Brussels has two aims: their own personal advantages and to attack the government and, hence, Malta.

Alex Agius Saliba stated that “everyone knows that PN MEPs’ ‘selling point’ is to please the establishment. They are proud of resolutions against Malta”.

He went on to say that they prefer to defend other countries, which is “where their hypocrisy comes out”, supposedly making a reference to EP President Roberta Metsola who faced criticism for her ideas on the fundamental rights in Bulgaria and on her position on the situation in the middle east.

Claudette Abela Baldacchino said on 8 June we will need to decide “if we are to forget when David Casa wrote the European Commission to start the process of suspending funds sent to Malta”. She went on to say that Labour differs from the Nationalist Party as “[the PN] tries to hurt our country for themselves to come on top… We are different. The state of the Maltese people will be in our politics for a long time to come.”

In reply, the PN said that is so much was achieved with two PN MEPs, more would be achievable if the PN elects three representatives in the June election.

The work carried out by Roberta Metsola and David Casa has led to a better quality of life via, among other things, a better work life balance and paternal leave.
Their work was appreciated to the extent that Metsola was named EP President and Casa was appointed Quaestor.
The PL's attempts to discredit their work is not impressing anyone, the PN said. The Labour Party, which was so against EU membership, cannot be credible when its speaks about Europe.
