Sliema Wanderers moved to the top of the standings claiming victory in the ‘Old Firm’ derby against Floriana. Sliema bounced back from the defeat against Hamrun Spartans with a solid display and gaining a deserved victory over the champions.

For Floriana it was an unexpected setback after their very good performance against Valletta. However Sliema fully deserved their victory yesterday, a victory that came through a great goal scored by Juri Cisotti direct from a freekick, a freekick that caught the Floriana custodian unprepared and slightly out of position.

The Champions faced this match full of confidence after their good performance and resulkt against Valletta in their last outing, whilst Sliema were still smarting from their defeat against Hamrun Spartans.

Floriana practically fielded an unchanged team from their victorious match against the Citizens, but on the other hand Sliema coach Andrea Pisanu made some changes from the initial line up that faced the Spartans.

John Mintoff, Alex Satariano and the team’s top scorer Jean Paul Farrugia took the place of Gilmar Ribeiro, Dejan Vukovic and Comvalius.

The start was very cautious from both sides with Sliema having a slight edge over their opponents.

Sliema had their first attempt from a distance by Cisotti after eight minutes, but the ball was off target.

The game failed to lift off with both goalkeepers never called in actuion. On the half hour Camenzuli tried his luck from a distance but his deflected shot went wide.

Six minutes into the second half Sliema scored what proved to be the winner when Juri Cisotti’s perfect freekick from ana acute angle, caught Akpan slightly out of position with the ball beautifully into the net.

Floriana tried to get back in the game but the Blues never gave away an inch. Camenzuli blasted well over the bar following one of his surging runs, but Floriana never looked capable of saving this match, as the Wanderers’ victory again puts them on top.
