PN Leader pays tribute to cousin Karin Grech, calls on police to solve political murders

Monday, 28 December 2020, 09:45 Last update: about 4 years ago

PN Leader Bernard Grech has paid tribute to his late cousin Karin Grech, who was killed by a letter bomb 43 years ago.

The 15-year-old died on 28 December 1977 after she opened a parcel that was addressed to her father, Professor Edwin Grech. At the time there was a doctor’s strike and Grech was still reporting for work. It is widely believed that the bomb attack was related to the strike, and the case is considered to be one of Malta’s political murders.

In a Facebook post, the PN Leader said the murder remains a stain on Malta’s recent political history and a wound for the family. He hoped the truth would one day emerge and the case would be solved.

“This ugly chapter in Malta’s history can only be closed when this murder, and all other political killings, is solved.”

He appealed to the Police Commissioner to do everything possible to solve these cases, despite the passage of time.

“I remain determined to clean up Maltese politics and to do my part so that politics truly becomes a tool for good,” he said.

No one should use a murder to score points against one political party or the other, he continued. “No one should be killed over politics, whatever the circumstances and irrespective of who the victims are. Every life is precious, and we should fight for it, and if lives are lost, we should unite for justice.”

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo stirred controversy on Sunday when he referred to the murder of Karin Grech as the “only” political murder in Malta. Many supported him, but others reminded the Minister that Daphne Caruana Galizia and Raymond Caruana’s murders were also politically motivated. He later updated his post to say that it was one of Malta’s political murders.

Caruana Galizia, a journalist and harsh Labour critic, was killed in a car bomb on 16 October 2017. Four men stand charged with her murder.

Raymond Caruana was shot dead inside the Gudja PN club on 5 December 1986. He was hit by shots fired from a moving car. The case remains unsolved.
