Monday, 28 December 2020, 15:33 Last update: about 4 years ago

Virologist Chris Barbara was one of the people who took the vaccine against Covid-19 on Monday.

Throughout the pandemic, virologist Barbara has been at the forefront, fighting against the virus in Malta. He is one of the first high-profile Maltese person to be publicly vaccinated against Covid-19.

“I didn’t feel the needle, I didn’t feel a thing,” Barbara said after being given the Covid-19 vaccine.

Journalist Brian Hansford captured Barbara taking the vaccine in a video.

Today is the second day that the Covid-19 vaccine is being administered in Malta.  Rachel Grech, a staff nurse at the Infectious Diseases Unit at Mater Dei Hospital, was the first to get the jab on Sunday morning.

After receiving the vaccine, she spoke of her hope that her experience will encourage Maltese and Gozitans to get vaccinated when they can do so.

Throughout the last few days of December and the first days of January, health frontliners will receive the jab, followed by residents of elderly care homes and those over 85 years of age.  The vaccination process will then move on in stages depending on how quickly Pfizer and other vaccine makers can supply the vaccine to Malta.

The government has said that it is confident that the whole of Malta's population can be vaccinated by summer.
