In a top of the table match played at the Hibs Stadium under heavy rain Hiberians managed to win their match against Sliema Wanderers thanks to a solitary goal scored by international defender Andrei Agius nine minutes into the second half.
After defeat against Birkirkara, Hibs bounced back with wins over Balzan and Senglea while Sliema went into this match losing two out of their last four matches to Hamrun and Mosta, though they collected maximum points from the clashes against Floriana and Tarxien.
In the first round match Sliema Wanderers emerged as clear winners when in a match played at the Centenary Stadium they won by a 3-1 scoreline.
On 4 minutes Hibernians went near to forge ahead when Vella found Degabriele who after rounding Shaw saw his shot blocked by an alert Galea. Sliema responded on 11 minutes when a Cisotti cross from the left flank caused havoc in the opposing area but no one was there to meet the ball and fire into the net.
A minute later controversy struck at the Hibs Stadium. A Degabriele free kick was perfectly met by Almeida whose header hit the crossbar and crossed the line with the ball being cleared away and Hibernians denied a legitimate goal.
In the 14th minute it was Hibernians once more when Degabriele found Iriberri in the penalty area but his final touch wasn’t the desired one. On 26 minutes Aquilina played the ball towards an onrushing Kisil whose long range shot sailed over the bar.
Just past the half hour following a mishap from the Paolites it was Cisotti who tried his luck with a shot from outside the area but Calleja Cremona saved. Three minutes from the break Milesi set Farrugia who after dummying an opponent fired a shot which was saved by Calleja Cremona.
Two minutes into the second half and Hibernians went near when Kristensen play a one two with Jake Grech but his shot from the edge of the area just missed the target. And on 54 minutes an Andrei Agius free kick was easy prey for the Sliema goalkeeper. The Poalites finally broke the stalemate in the 54th minutes when Galea played the ball in the area and Vella with a backheel set Andrei Agius whose left foot beauty found the corner of the net.
Five minutes from the end of the match an Edmond Agius grounder was saved with some difficulty by Calleja Cremona. And on the stroke of time it was again Edmond Agius who fired a shot from the edge of the area which Calleja Cremona turned onto a corner. Five minutes of added time didn’t change anything with Hibernians grabbing maximum points from a difficult match.
