Former minister Joe Cassar has been named new president of the Cana Movement, a non-governmental organisation run within the structures of the Church.
The Curia said in a statement that Cassar will replace Arthur Galea Salomone, who held the post for eight years.
Among the movement’s services are marriage preparation courses and counselling to people in difficulty.
Cassar is a consultant psychiatrist who graduated at the University of Malta before continuing his studies at Yale University in the United States.
He is also a senior lecturer at the University of Malta and leads the psychiatry emergency service at Mater Dei Hospital.
Cassar also served as Health Minister.
