Hamrun Spartans fans again investigated on breach of Covid-19 protocol

Monday, 15 February 2021, 08:26 Last update: about 4 years ago

For the second time in as many weeks, Hamrun Spartans fans are being investigated for breaching protocols related to Covid-19.

Two weeks ago spontaneous celebrations that erupted in the streets of Ħamrun as well as a club after the Spartans won a key match against Valletta FC were put under the microscope after footage appeared on social media showing fans disregarding regulations. It is not known if fines have been issued.

Now, last Saturday, a new video was uploaded, showing fans celebrating Hamrun's win over Birkirkara, which keeps the Spartans at the top of the table.

The new footage shows club president and Gozitan property magnate Joseph Portelli lighting a cigarette inside a catering establishment. He also is not shown wearing a mask.

A police spokesperson told Times of Malta that the matter was being investigated.

Some of the individuals who appear in the video have been identified and are being spoken to by the police.

Later on Sunday, Portelli acknowledged that he had broken the law.

"The moment I walked in, everyone jumped onto me," he said. "I like it."

"I apologise for breaking the law. I didn’t do so capriciously [bi ksuħat], I broke the law because I was happy about winning," he said during ONE TV sports show L-Argument.
