The Nationalist Party has accused Finance Minister Clyde Caruana of closing an eye to the illegal employment of 1,200 foreign nationals.

A statement written by PN MP Jason Azzopardi and President of the PN’s workers’ Solidarity Group Ivan Castillo hit out at the minister, saying that he was the person responsible for the thousands of foreigners brought to Malta for work over the past years and said that “JobsPlus, of which he was the chairman, closed its eyes to the employment of thousands of foreigners with third parties with inhumane working conditions.”

The statement came in reaction to news reports that over 1,200 third-country nationals working for taxi and food delivering services could be employed on illegal work contacts in breach of Malta's employment laws.

The statement read that JobsPlus closed its eyes to abuse. “And so the government was complicit in the persistent and intentional breach of the law.”

The statement noted that the government had refused the proposal of a number of employers for there to be codes of conduct within the law that regulates the platform economy.

The two appealed to the government go before the MCESD and provide a clear explanation of where this section of Malta’s economy is heading.
