Repubblika's ‘preoccupation’ at lack of arrests from ‘political camp’ over Daphne murder

Tuesday, 16 February 2021, 11:14 Last update: about 4 years ago

The NGO Repubblika has expressed its preoccupation at the fact that nobody from the political camp has been taken to court to answer for their behaviour in connection with the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

In a letter sent to Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa on the 40th month since the journalist was assassinated in a car bombing, Repubblika spoke of their “major preoccupation” on the fact that “so far nobody from the political camp has been taken to court to answer for their behaviour in connection with this murder or with the rampant corruption which ruled our country and which was at the root of this assassination.”

They said that people from the business world had been charged, but that “it seems that politicians and those close to them are untouchable.”

Rule of law means that the law is supreme and that it is equal for all, Repubblika said.

They said that they are worried that scepticism is growing and that a cynical attitude which feels that everything is remaining the same, despite any and all changes, is increasing.

“We need to believe that Malta is also capable of being a free and democratic state where nobody takes advantage of impunity and that everybody, from the big to the small, including those in politics, has to pay for their behaviour”, the NGO concluded.
