An application on a site overlooking the Ġgantija temples in Xaghra, Gozo, proposes the construction of an apartment complex on five levels.

The site is located on Triq il-Parsott, Xaghra. It forms part of the Area of Archaeological importance, as part of the lands surrounding the Ġgantija Temples. The area of archaeological importance does cover parts of Xaghra which are already built up.

The application (PA00570/21), proposes the demolition of the existing dwelling and the construction of 20 garages at basement level and 31 overlying apartments on four levels above. The topmost level is indicated to be a setback floor.

A few residents have aired their concerns about the proposal. One objector complained that “besides destroying a vernacular building characteristic of Gozo and Xagħra, the proposed building is going to be an eyesore when seen from the nearby World Heritage site of the Ġgantija Temples.”

The Superintendent of Cultural Heritage does not seem to have yet commented on the application, which was only filed last December.
