Updated: Micallef asks Standards Commissioner to investigate Azzopardi’s tax filings

Labour media chairman Jason Micallef has asked Standards Czar George Hyzler to investigate Jason Azzopardi’s tax filings.

The Labour Party this week said the PN MP had not filed a tax return for his 2018 income. One News published the report after obtaining the MP’s tax returns from Parliament.

In a press conference on Friday, the PL said Azzopardi was “false and a hypocrite.”

Azzopardi has said that he had submitted his tax returns late due to his separation proceedings.

In a Facebook post, Micallef said he had asked Hyzler to investigate whether Azzopardi had breached ethics. He said he had reported the matter to the Standards Commissioner “as a private citizen and in the national interest."

The PN MP has said he had not managed to file his tax returns on time because of separation proceedings. He said he had filed his tax returns for 2018 and 2019 in January of this year and is waiting for the department to process them.

Azzopardi showed this newsroom correspondence he had with the Clerk of the House in November of last year, in which he had immediately consented to a request to have his 2020 tax return sent to the Standards Commissioner.

He had also pointed out that, as the Revenue Commissioner could confirm, he had filed his tax returns for the previous three years due to court procedures related to his separation.

Azzopardi said Commissioner Marvin Gaerty had assured him that this state of fact was “very normal” in personal separation proceedings.
