The Medical Association of Malta has welcomed the measures announced by the government on Wednesday, which include the closure of schools and non-essential shops.

The measures were announced by Prime Minister Robert Abela amid record numbers of daily Covid-19 cases. 510 new cases were found on Wednesday.

MAM said it will “closely monitor” the situation on the evolution of the pandemic and its effect on the health services.

The association encouraged the general public, especially the elderly and vulnerable groups to stay at home and to have minimal social contact.

“The stepping up of enforcement for non-compliance with public health measures is welcome and needs to be maintained,” it said.

“MAM is pleased that there is a regular supply of vaccines and encourages the health authorities to complete the vaccination of people aged 60-80 as soon as possible. More transparency on the roll out of vaccination and an efficient and working helpline for this age group would be beneficial,” it said.

The government had been facing mounting pressure to introduce new measures, with several medical associations warning the health system is close to collapse.
