Thursday, 18 March 2021, 18:05 Last update: about 4 years ago

Two Gozitan priests who stand charged with abusing a young altar bay have been released on bail, One News reports.

Despite being named in the past, it is understood that the court has banned the publication of the names of the priests, both of whom are pleading not guilty to the charges. The alleged abuse took place between 2003 and 2005.

The case against them is being heard behind closed doors. A previous request for bail had been denied.

One News reports that the pair have now been granted bail, against a number of conditions. These include not approaching the alleged victim.

A breach of the conditions would result in a fine of €7,000 or two years behind bars.

They also have to sign the bail book at a police station.
