Socialists and Democrats block EP debate on Caruana Galizia murder

The Socialists and the Democrats have blocked a request by the EPP to hold a debate at the European Parliament on the latest developments in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The EPP made the call earlier this week following the testimony given by Vince Muscat il-Kohhu, who again named former Economy Minister Chris Cardona in the case and also claimed that another “sitting minister” was involved in a “big job.”

The EPP said in a tweet on Thursday that TheProgressives “continue to stick their head in the sand” about serious allegations of involvement by Malta’s highest levels of government in the murder case and have now blocked a request for a plenary debate next week.

EPP chairman Manfred Weber said the group will be filing a new request for a debate.

“We need to show the Maltese authorities that they are under international scrutiny and we expect them to follow the path of justice wherever that may lead,” he tweeted.

On Thursday, Labour MEPs Cyrus Engerer and Alex Agius Saliba criticised their PN counterparts for pushing the debate. Engerer said the request was “unbelievable” while Agius Saliba said this was “an unnecessary attack”.

Nationalist MEPs David Casa and Roberta Metsola have said that the PN and civil society will continue to fight for justice. Casa added that their job is to defend Malta’s reputation, not the mafia that runs the country.
