Tuesday, 30 March 2021, 18:49 Last update: about 4 years ago

The Prime Minister has defended the Electrogas power station, saying that it results in lower energy bills and contributes to a better quality of life for the people.

The Prime Minister was being asked about the latest Macbridge revelations. In a story on Monday, the Times of Malta revealed that Macbridge International Development is a company which is owned by Tang Zhaomin, the mother-in-law of negotiator Chen Cheng.

The Prime Minister was asked whether he will heed the Opposition Leader's suggestions to cut ties with Electrogas.

"If there is someone who did wrong in a project that individual must pay for that wrongdoing. That is why this government has complete trust in the institutions to do their work without looking at faces. But we do not attack projects that leave a lot of benefits for the people. The Electrogas project results in lower electricity and a better quality of life for the people."

"The letter I sent to the police commissioner shows my trust in the institution," he said.

Asked whether he still believes former Prime Minister didn't know anything about what his left and right hand men knew about the situation, the Prime Minister did not answer the question, only saying that Muscat is no longer a part of the government.

Asked to confirm if cabinet was told that Cheng Chen's mother in law was the owner of Macbridge in November 2019, he said that he got to know about it from the media yesterday.
