Saturday, 17 April 2021, 15:10 Last update: about 4 years ago

Flowers were placed on the doorstep at Villa Guardamangia in tribute to Prince Philip on the day of his funeral in London.

Prince Philip and then princess Elizabeth had lived there while the prince served in the navy in the late 1940s.

Members of the Malta George Cross Movement, the Royal Naval Association Malta branch, Malta Command WW2 Living History Group and members of the public placed wreaths at the steps of the historic villa the royal couple lived between 1949 and 1951.

People also gathered at Upper Barrakka Gardens to witness a gun salute for the late Prince, fired from the Saluting Battery at 12pm.

The nine-gun salute -  one for each decade of the Duke of Edinburgh's life - was organised by the Wirt Artna Foundation and the Malta Tourism Authority.

Prince Philip died last week aged 99.
