PN executive committee to meet Thursday to take action on Delia, Azzopardi Facebook posts

The Nationalist Party’s executive committee will meet on Thursday to decide what course of action to take after Facebook posts uploaded by two of its MPs, apparently in breach of recently issued instructions.

Former Opposition Leader Adrian Delia on Tuesday challenged fellow PN MP Jason Azzopardi to sue him after the latter uploaded a post related to a libel suit he won this week.

The case had been filed against a former canvasser of Delia, who had claimed that Azzopardi had made use of a ‘working girl’ at a hotel.

He said he has since forgiven the man, Vincent Borg known as Censu l-Iswed, adding that he knew that Borg had been “used, deceived and manipulated.”

Delia retaliated, challenging Azzopardi to publish the 700 messages he supposedly has on the former party leader and other information that allegedly links him to Yorgen Fenech.

In a short statement, the PN said that after certain Facebook posts that went against regulations issued by the party, PN Leader Bernard Grech was convening the Executive Committee on Thursday at 7pm so that it would, “according to the statute, take all decisions deemed necessary in these circumstances.”

When contacted, a spokesman for the PN would not comment further.

Attempts by this newsroom to contact Delia and Azzopardi today proved unsuccessful.

A few weeks ago, the PN issued instructions to its MPs and candidates, telling them not to criticise and insult each other so as to promote the idea of unity within the party.

“The more time goes by and the closer we approach the general election, the more important it is that our message is coordinated,” the PN said.

It said that “regardless of any provocation that could occur from people who want to harm the party, we should never pass that are, or can be considered, critical, or worse derogatory, against MPs and candidates.”

“Equally, comments about the party that can in any way cast a negative shadow over it are definitely unacceptable under any circumstances.”

The PN told its MPs that the message should always be a consistent one of unity and mutual respect towards each other and the party.

“This principle also applies to social media posts we upload or which are uploaded in our name, as well as ‘likes’ and ‘shares on other people’s posts.”
