St Andrew's chapel in Zurrieq has been restored using European Union funds.

€30,000, including European funds, were used to give a new lease of life to a seventeenth-century chapel in Żurrieq.

European funds are being used to preserve our cultural heritage for the benefit of the people in the locality and tourists who come and visit," Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said.

The chapel is found next to the Xarolla Windmill.

The restoration works conducted in this chapel with European funds include the external church walls and yard walls surrounding the perimeter of the chapel. The cleaning of the façade, the removal of any plaster, renders and metal inserts and the structural interventions and consolidation.

Zrinzo Azzopardi explained that together with the 21 projects which were concluded or are nearing completion, another 12 new projects have been awarded with the total allocation amounting to about €100,000 for the preservation of the Maltese cultural heritage.

Present for this press conference there was Żurrieq Local Council Mayor, Rita Grima, and the Manager of the Gal Xlokk Foundation, Terence Camilleri, which administer the European funds from the LEADER programme.

GAL Xlokk Foundation Manager Terence Camilleri said that, “the foundation is successfully implementing the LEADER programme in the south east territory of Malta. The Foundation supports several local councils, voluntary organisations and private individuals interested in one of the measures forming part of the local development strategy. In fact, the foundation has allocated all funds under this programme. We are eager to witness more projects which will be finalised in the coming months. The general public and tourists visiting these sites will surely be appreciating such assets found in the territory.”
