A number of “limited and controlled” activities and events will be allowed throughout the months of July and August, Health Minister Chris Fearne announced on Monday.

The news comes as the government announced how Malta’s Covid-19 vaccine certificate will work, indicating that this certificate will allow the reopening of certain cultural and social activities.

Fearne said that discussions with operators of cultural and entertainment events had been ongoing for a number of weeks, and said that throughout July and August a number of “limited and controlled” activities where holders of the vaccine certificate can participate will be allowed to take place.

“The events will be controlled and limited, and if there is success throughout July and August, then these events will increase so that, while keeping everyone safe, we can get our cultural and social lives back to normal”, Fearne said.

Spontaneous activities where one cannot control who enters, such as feasts, are not amongst those which will be allowed to take place, Fearne later said while answering questions from journalists.

People are eligible for a vaccine certificate after 14 days have elapsed since they were fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

The news comes on the same day that a lobby group proposed that events with 25% capacity, with a maximum of 300 people, should start to be held by 14 June, with the intention to gradually open up to full capacity by September.

Fearne said that more details on the restart of such events will be provided in the coming days.
