The Malta Developers Association said this morning it is holding intense discussions with government on the pending issue of dumping of construction and demolition waste which is causing a major stalling of progress in the construction industry across the country.

There have been a patchwork of attempted solutions along the years in a bid to solve the problem, however, none have proved to be effective long term, the MDA said in a statement. The problem has lately been accentuated by fact that major roadworks have taken place generating a considerable amount of waste, adding on to the surmounting pressures surrounding the issue.

The Director General of the MDA, Deborah Schembri, is insisting that the current position is untenable and an immediate solution needs to be found and a way forward agreed upon without undue delay.

During a meeting with Minister Aaron Farrugia, she presented to him a set of proposals with short and long-term solutions, in an effort to resolve the impasse which is causing great distress to various sectors within the building and construction industry.

A follow-up meeting with the minister has been set for the coming days during which government has promised to highlight a way forward.

The MDA said it looks forward to a long-lasting solution however it insists that whatever this entails it should have immediate results otherwise this stalemate would not only jeopardise the livelihood of one of the most productive sectors of the Maltese economy but would also create havoc on our roads as road construction would need to come to an almost complete standstill. This is the last thing one wishes to happen during the coming summer months.
