Former footballer and coach Edward Aquilina has died, aged 75.

Aquilina had a blistering career with Sliema Wanderers, winning six league championships and three FA tophies before he moved to join Hibernians, with whom he won another title.

He was a regular starter with the Maltese national team since the country’s first international match against Austria in 1959. He played 12 times with the national jersey.

Aquilina then went on to have a glittering career as a coach, leading Valletta FC to two league titles in the late 1990s and Sliema to three league wins between 2002 and 2005.

Aquilina later became a football analyst on television. For a time, he was also an analyst for The Malta Independent.
