Former Malta international Andre Schembri has been appointed as the football director of Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

Schembri, who retired from football last season, takes on the role at what is one of Cyprus’ best clubs.

He was already contracted to Apollon Limassol, but as the coach of one of the club’s youth teams.

“I am honoured and humbled to be trusted with the responsibility of the role of a Football Director with the first team of Apollon Limassol FC and will dedicate my work to ensure the club’s success,” Schembri wrote on his Facebook page.

“My new position is a great opportunity to work in a high-performance environment and I am grateful for being given the chance to illustrate my abilities.”

Schembri is not a new name to the club: he played for Apollon Limassol for two seasons between 2017 and 2019, before he spent a year playing with Chennaiyin FC in India – in what would be his final year playing football.

He played a total of 78 games with the Cypriot side, scoring 15 goals in those games – including 4 in the Europa League and a winning goal in the Cypriot Super Cup.

Schembri was also capped 94 times with the national team, with whom he scored 3 goals – 2 of which were in a famous 2-1 win against Hungary in 2006 as part of the qualifiers for the European Championships of 2008.
