Labour Member of the European Parliament Cyrus Engerer has been appointed negotiator of the Progressive Alliance of Socialist and Democrats in the European Parliament on the Proposal for a Directive on reception conditions laying down standards for the reception of applicants for international protection (Reception Conditions Directive Recast).
Cyrus Engerer said that he is honoured that in such a short time in the European Parliament he has been trusted by the group of Socialists on another file relating to mingration. “All proposals on immigration are of utmost importance for Malta. I’m honoured that in such a short period of time in the European Parliament I am being given the role of negotiator for S&D on migration issues in the LIBE committee.” Engerer made reference to the role he was given a couple of weeks ago as negotiator on legal migration policy and law in the European Union.
In his speech, Cyrus Engerer reminded that the European Union border is a common border and no Member State should be left facing the challenge of saving lives and processing migrants alone. He said that the European Parliament has spoken strongly on this subject and that it is now time for Member States to honour their committments on migration burden sharing.
